Question 1

What belongs in a basic emergency supply kit?

Accepted Answer

Ready.gov recommends starting with water and non-perishable food for several days, along with basics such as a flashlight, radio, first aid kit, sanitation supplies, and a can opener if your food needs one.

Question 2

How much water and food should I plan for?

Accepted Answer

Federal guidance gives a starting point of one gallon of water per person per day and at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food. Household needs vary, so use those amounts as a starting point and plan for the people who rely on you.

Question 3

How can I tailor supplies to my household?

Accepted Answer

Ready.gov advises considering your household’s unique needs. Depending on who is in your household, examples to think about could include prescription medicines, infant supplies, and pet food and water; this is not a complete list for everyone.

Question 4

Should I keep supplies in more than one place?

Accepted Answer

FEMA recommends considering a full kit at home and smaller portable kits at work, in a vehicle, or in other places you spend time.
